PYUSD on Venmo

Task

PayPal USD (PYUSD), a stablecoin pegged to the U.S. dollar, launched first on the PayPal app. The next strategic step was to introduce it to Venmo users, a platform with a younger, more casual audience.

The Challenge

We first needed to adapt the experience from PayPal to Venmo. While there was a great deal of regulatory red tape, there was a need to translate the more formal nature of a regulated stablecoin into Venmo’s friendly, approachable, and community-focused voice and tone.

As a high-profile launch in a heavily regulated space, every word of in-app content, notifications, and emails would need to undergo multiple, urgent rounds of revision from both internal and external legal counsel. The content had to be both legally airtight and effortlessly understandable.

Our goal was to create a seamless, trustworthy, and uniquely “Venmo” experience for users to buy, sell, hold, trade, and convert PYUSD.

My Thought Process

My strategy was to bridge the gap between legal requirements and the Venmo user’s expectation for clear, light-hearted communication. While PayPal’s messaging is more formal and mature, my strategy was to flex Venmo’s brand personality. This meant:

    • Using contractions (“you’ll” instead of “you will”).
    • Opting for shorter, more conversational sentences.
    • In the blog post, I introduced PYUSD not just as a stablecoin, but as a tool for the Venmo community.

Since this project was very important to both Venmo and PayPal, there was a very intense legal review process. I worked directly with legal counsel to understand the risk behind each change, not just the words.

I also advocated for what I thought was the experience. Instead of just inserting legalese, I brainstormed multiple content options that met both legal and user experience standards. For example, a required disclaimer was integrated as a collapsible “Learn more” section rather than a distracting wall of text.

The Outcome

By launching on Venmo, we significantly accelerated the adoption of PYUSD. This move was a key driver in the stablecoin’s growth, contributing to its remarkable market performance. For context, within months of its broader launch (including on Venmo), PYUSD’s market capitalization reached over $300 million and was integrated into major decentralized finance (DeFi) protocols. This directly led to increased transaction volume and profits for the platform.

This project was a challenge in navigating extreme regulatory constraints while championing user-centric content. I demonstrated that even under intense legal scrutiny, it’s possible to deliver content that is both compliant and embodies a brand’s unique voice.
